"Easysteer" bmw 2002 1602 retro fit electronic steering system. The bmw column comes ready built and ready to fit, the system fits in the same place as the original column, it retains all the stock switch gear ignition lock and column shrouds and appears untouched.
The whole thing can be fitted with basic know how in a few hours, you will need to remove a small section of the outer tube on the bulkhead to allow the column to slip under the dash (very easy) but for those without the time or knowledge we offer a full inhouse installation service. As with all our power steering systems this come complete with a steering ecu and our own purpose built standard steering control unit which can be also be upgraded should you feel the need to alter the steering feel." 3 controller options " available on bmw steering systems. Our standard variable controller (included in every kit) which is hard wired with a nice discreet adjusting knob, it works by sending the signals to the steering ecu (normally sent from the cars sensors) this adjusts the steering and gives the driver full control of the assistance via the adjuster (included as standard). Our torque sensing system which will constantly analyse the force applied at the steering wheel by the driver and automatically adjust the steering assistance level. So if the driver is applying more force at the steering wheel (eg when parking) the steering will automatically give the maximum assistance. If the driver is on the motorway applying less force at the steering wheel then the steering will automatically turn off, allowing the driver to have very precise steering at higher speeds.
The torque controller doesnt use an adjustment knob, it will automatically adjust for you , included is a discreet led. The installation of the led is optional, the led indicates to the driver the level of assistance being given. Speed sensitive power steering control unit , this converts your vehicles speed into a signal that the power steering ecu expects to see. This gives the eps ecu the ability to run different assistant levels depending on the vehicle speed. To do this the controller needs a 5v to 12v pulse from your speed sensor, so it would need either a proximity sensor (which is supplied) and is the simplest way to read speed, or a hall sensor that detects a bolt or toothed wheel, etc.
Before you can consider installing retro fit electric power steering there are a few boxes that need to be ticked, its needs to be 12 volt, it needs to be negative earth , there needs to be space in and around the column to house the gearbox and motor (different systems have different dimensions) also you need to consider wiring and rods that run internally up the column, aswell as external column shifts and traficators etc. At "easysteer" we have our own take on the electric power steering system, which involves quite a bit of machining quite a bit of thinking and quite a bit of cleaver electronics , but in a nutshell we cut the column in two and splice an electric motor in there , wire up some clever electronics and give the vehicle electronic power assistance (if only it was that simple) on any steering system we do regardless of weather its a full install or a column build there are 3 thing we always do, firstly make sure that every joint or coupling we add to the steering system is stronger than whats already fitted, the second thing we do it hide it away as much as is possible, and thirdly make sure all the original equipment fits back on were possible to leave it looking original and untouched.
" why fit electric power steering ". Before you decide to fit electric power steering there are a few pro's and con's you need to consider when you compare it with a hydraulic or even electro hydraulic system, and in our opinion "easysteer" electric power steering tick all the boxes every time. No horse power lose (running belts and pump etc). No extra weight to the car power racks/pipes/pumps/reservoir/fluid.
No extra costs either initially or cost over the life of the vehicle (keeping standard rack etc). No extra junk under the hood, retaining a clean uncluttered engine bay.
No noise, totally silent operation. No extra emissions or other environmental impacts.Steering feel and the ability to control it in various ways (pot/speed/auto controllers). Works without the engine running. Can reverted back to original without visible signs (not that you would). "Please note all our ready built column are subject to an additional refundable column surcharge, LHD options are available".
